We have a COBie project that is under construction right now by Pankow with the Los Angeles Community College (LACCD).

LACCD has agreed to share the data and model publicly through the BIMStorm.

LACCD is getting ready to release a COBie spec.

We are inviting any other vendor or interested party to view, interact with and comment on this process. This is a good chance to test the capability of COBIe to support BIM going from Construction to Operations. Note that this project started a few year ago prior to the LACCD requirement for BIM or COBie. The COBie data is being populated and this first version shows some equipment with COBie output,

BIM+GIS+FM are being mashed together for the California Community Colleges
Miracosta Community College has submitted three projects to the #BIMStorm and the program requirements are ready for BIM teams to work with.
Los Angeles Community College has submitted one project for BIM to FM.
Balfour Beatty is assembling a large multi-disciplinary team to work on on all the projects.
Gehry Technologies and Onuma are enabling BIM Servers for the BIMStorm

Vela Systems is working with Balfour Beatty to support BIM to FM.

Some might think, “BIMStorm BIG BIM BANG – What is this? I am a building industry professional with a need to learn about BIM, but I have a limited amount of of resources. I don't have time for tongue twisters connected to my business.”

Exactly! There is no time to get twisted up by what others are saying about BIM.

BIMStorms allow building industry professionals the ability to directly interact with real building project data just as you would on building projects using web-based Building Information Models.

Since 2008 BIMStorm participants have included federal building owners, such as the GSA and US Coast Guard, whose sharing of project information has been a hallmark of these online brainstorms using Building Information Models.

I was very pleasantly surprised to see that a state education owner, California Community Colleges and a private healthcare owner, Kaiser Permanente, are providing real building project data for exploration in the learn-by-doing BIMStorm BIG BIM BANG. (www.BIMStorm.com/WAS)

BIG BIM is what Finith Jernigan, AIA refers to as the big picture view of Building Information Model software and processes as opposed to the “little bim” use of individual software programs. But in this case, “BIG” can refer to the large portfolios operated by this year's owner participants. “BANG” must describe the impact when you participate.

Show your stuff

In the introductory webinar (http://vimeo.com/31397051), it was clear the owners are interested in learning who is able to help them gain dramatic cost reductions while improving building design services, construction quality and performance.

That positions BIMStorm as a trust-building exercise where established teams or new colleagues can provide potential clients with a public demonstration of capabilities. With both Kaiser Permanente and California Community Colleges owning large portfolio, the ability to show web-based BIM capabilities for potential projects in many regions is a highly valuable trust-building opportunity.

With the Healthcare BIM Consortium watching the activities of this BIMStorm, there is almost half the healthcare building industry watching these activities. Healthcare BIM Consortium owner members include Sutter Health, the Dept. of Veterans Affairs, the Dept. of Defense Health System and University of Texas.

While consolidated in one state, California Community Colleges has 71 million square feet of facilities. In the first webinar (PDF summary at www.slideshare.net/mbordenaro) John Roach indicated the interest in meeting capable building industry professionals. She the essay focusing on the CCC also at the previous link. There is a clear desire to knowing about web-based business processes. Show them what you can do.

For those not ready to publicly show their capabilities, web-based data sharing can be explored internally with real project data but with no real repercussions.

Data sharing exercises with Trelligence, Gehry Technology's GTX Sync web server and other technologies is of great interest. It is the ability to exchange data among many programs that is will be of greatest demand during the entire life of a building. While the graphic capabilities of the programs are very exciting, if the information is locked in any one program, it is of less value to the owners.

The BIMStorm leadership has gained the attention of significant building owners. It is still an amazing demonstration of building industry unity when the BIMStorm results reveal just how many people used an array of software connected across a range of hardware systems.

Fun stuff.

While I have always been attracted to the beauty of architecture, I am growing ever more interested in the web-based processes that are creating the leading buildings of today and will help them operate well into the future.

I was lucky enough to have my father recently introduce a BIM seminar for the Society of Military Engineers. Col. (ret.) Ronald Bordenaro is a SAME life member and ended his introduction with the SAME motto “Essayons!”- French for “Let us try!” That could also be the motto BIMStorm, which was part of the seminar. I look forward to seeing and reporting on what adventurous building industry professionals achieve during this BIMStorm BIG BIM Bang.

Shelters set up in Ofunato Japan

A photo essay by Don Kubley of Intershelter.

Don just returned to the US from Northern Japan yesterday. He called and filed this report and photos.

His mission was to go to eastern Japan and set up the Intershelter that arrived by plane a few days earlier. He made his way to Ofuanto Japan where he met with local mayors and set up the shelter. The need in Japan is for 100,000 shelters.

Residents evacuated into gymnasiums are set up in 8 foot by 8 foot spaces, separated by cardboard boxes.

BIM and LifeCyle Data
Onuma successfully completed the COBIE2 Challenge in Baltimore Maryland along Bentley Systems, TOKMO, VELA, Archibus, AssetWorks, Eagle Technologies and TMA Sytems.

Eight vendors participated in the Construction Operations Building information exchange (COBie) Challenge March 17, in Baltimore, Maryland. Held during the National Facility Maintenance and Technology tradeshow for the second year, the Challenge gave vendors the opportunity to demonstrate their software systems’ compliance with COBie.

COBie is an international open standard for the delivery of facility operations, maintenance and management deliverables. The focus of this year’s NFMT COBie2 challenge was the delivery and use of COBie information during design, construction, maintenance and facility management.
